UPDATE2: The optical drive is reinstalled, but I have no picture on hdmi or composite AV. If anyone has any advice, that would be amazing.

At this point, I have a ps3 with no disc drive installed, trying to install system software to hdd. Now that the optical drive is removed, the restore functions don't seem to work properly. UPDATE: I removed the optical drive and the unit boots into safe mode. Is there any way to get the system to at least boot into safe mode again, or am I sitting on a brick? The thing was working 2 hours ago. It no longer gives me the 5 and 7 second beeps to get into safe mode OR reset video output settings. When I hold the power button down from an "OFF" state, the system boots up, and around 10 seconds later it beeps and suddenly shuts down. The system boots and stays running for a good 5 minutes or so before powering down, no YLOD, and no video output over AV or HDMI. I powered the system down, and I can no longer access safe mode. I tried doing some of the recovery options in safe mode, and the system hung on one of the options (restore default settings). I switched to AV cable and could not get any output either except for in safe mode. When I popped the HDD back in, I no longer had any output over HDMI unless I booted into safe mode. I figured the ps3 would respond as if I put a fresh HDD in.

At this point I was stuck in a update loop, so I took out the HDD and decided to format it on my pc using a sata to usb3 cable. I tried to do a software update, and it got stuck at 99% due to a optical drive error (broken clip on the ribbon cable). I could fully get into XMB and navigate everything without issues. I booted it up and everything worked flawlessly. I recently delidded and replaced thermal paste on a ps3 I just bought second hand. Got a subreddit you want to see here? Message the mods!
